Every now and then I'll launch Revit in the morning, and it just sits there with a gray program screen and the Windows circle spinning. I looked in the journal file and here are the last few lines:

...
Jrn.Command "Internal" , "Show or hide recent files , ID_STARTUP_PAGE"
'C 15-Oct-2013 08:30:22.800; 0:< <-processShellCommand
' 0:< ->DesktopMFCApp::doStartupWarnings
'C 15-Oct-2013 08:30:22.800; 0:< manage licensing

It's just sitting there on that last line "manage licensing". The only way to get out of Revit is to kill the process. Then if I re-open it keeps doing the same thing. Only solution is to reboot the machine completely.

Normal journal files go like this:

...
'C 14-Oct-2013 08:05:37.263; 0:< manage licensing
' 0:< License mode: Standalone
' 0:< Status: Your license is non-expiring.
' 0:< Type: Standalone - Locked
' 0:< Usage: Commercial
' 0:< Behavior: Permanent
' 0:< Expiration: None
'C 14-Oct-2013 08:05:39.873; 0:< manage involvement
' 0:< ::1:: Delta VM: Avail -16 -> 8387214 MB, Used +2 -> 259 MB; RAM: Avail +2 -> 9234 MB, Used +6 -> 327 MB
'C 14-Oct-2013 08:05:40.653; 0:< manage debug modes
...

Note how after manage licensing it goes on with the "standalone", "non-expiring" etc. etc.

What could be going on here?

Well I also noticed that whenever this happens, when I try to reboot the machine, it sits there at the "Logging Off" screen and never gets past that. I have to do a hard reset by holding down the PC's power button. So I'm guessing there's some kind of Windows issue that's affecting what Revit can find for my standalone license or something?

Do you have both 2013 and 2014 installed? There was a .net issue between the 2 and you needed to have SP3 installed for 2013 in order to get them to work right. I have a sim issue with my home computer. it never turns off, but I think that's cause it's super old and Windows won't get updates anymore.

Yes I also have 2013 installed and it is SP3. As I recall I had this issue also in 2013 and now in 2014. Might have even happened in 2012 but not totally sure. It's like something with my machine is happening overnight (while logged off) such that the next morning it causes issues with Revit licensing, and also with shutting down the machine.
