I find myself wanting to do this very often. I create a section of the building before I start modeling too far. That way levels and other items are pretty accurate. Now my issue is, after I block out a section of a wall, sometimes I want to model a mass of it for the elevations. To do that, I'd like to start by tracing what I detailed and then sweep it or extrude it or what have you. However, I see no way to set the work plane while in the section. I can select a grid line that is close to my cut but I want the section I am drawing in to be the actual work plane. Is there a way to accomplish this?

You can't use section as a plane... which make sense i think. If you really need one. Create a reference plane then snap your section to that reference plane. use it then as a work plane

Well that is a good plan, I'm going to try that out.

When you create a reference plane be sure to name it, Name parameter in properties. This makes it easier to set a view's work plane to the reference plane. It also needs to be parallel to the view you are working in otherwise you won't be able to use it, except if you are in a 3D view.
