Room bounding issue in linked model phased design options

i have a linked model with a few design options under one option set, and a couple of phases, though only one that applies to the do's. The problem i'm having is this: Some walls in the linked model are set to be demolished in the associated phase, which show up fine in the new model (ie, they show as being demolished). However, when i try to make a space with the new wall arrangements in the new model, the only spaces that show up are those formed by the demolished walls of the linked model. i've not ever had this problem with design options picking up spaces from demolished walls. i've searched and searched and cannot find an answer for this. Any ideas??
