The AIA Technology in Architectural Practice (TAP) Knowledge Community will host its first annual Building Information Model (BIM) Awards competition this spring. The competition is seeking projects that have used integrated and interoperable building information models. The first BIM awards will, by their nature, be preliminary and speculative in terms of the efforts under way in the industry.

The deadline for submissions is April 11, 2005. Submissions should be e-mailed to dpaul@aia.org (dpaul@aia.org) no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 11. Three awards will be given for best examples of the use of building information models. Winning submissions will have registration fees (for up to two individuals) waived for the upcoming TAP workshop, “Betting on the Future of Architecture: Risks, Rewards, and Opportunities of Technology”, where the winning entries will be presented.

Criteria
Presentations will be judged on:

Quantifiable benefits in cost, schedule, or quality
Interoperability between software applications
Effective team collaboration
Process change that “moves the ball forward”
Cultural change
Return on value (value achieved for the project divided by value expended in the effort).
Special emphasis is on:

Real-world projects, not technology demonstrations
Teams, not individuals.
Each submission shall

Describe the project challenge that led to the adoption of BIM technology
dentify the design/construction team members and define their roles
Quantify the benefits achieved
Describe non-technology factors contributing to that success
Have the signature of an authorized representative of the project owner
Include the following project summary information for each submission:

Project name

Project/facility type
Location
Client
Date completed/occupied
Size
Lead design, office
Lead construction firm, office
Design phase collaborators
Construction phase collaborators
Submitter's contact information.

All materials must be submitted in a single .pdf file. (Click here (https://mail.watg.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.aia.org/tap_a_submissions) for recommended settings.)
