Using Split Element - user created parameters lost

I have created a yes/no parameter for walls for use in a Filter. Problem: when walls are split in two for demo purposes (using the Split Element tool), one of the segments retains the parameter setting, the other does not. This happens with any user-created parameter (Project or Shared) but not system parameters (Structural or Room-Bounding). I duplicated this in version 2013 as well.

I could not find any documentation online regarding this question. Is this "a feature or a bug" as they say?

Regardless, does anyone have a suggestion or workaround for this? Users expect both segments to have identical properties and it is causing many headaches.

When you split the wall, in fact Revit is creating a new element. Since it's an instance properties its then set to the default value (greyed out)
