If you really want to learn the program, I suggest Instructor Based Training from an Autodesk Authorized Training Center. You can locate the nearest one here (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=3001477)

If your training budget is like ours (get a book and learn it by Tuesday) then try Amazon they have several good books on inventor 9. Mine is "autodesk inventor 9 : essentials plus"
It comes with an exercise CD with lessons to work through and is pretty good. They also have the best prices, usually.

If you are getting a book, I recommend any written by Travis Jones, Daniel Banach and/or Neil Munroe.

the book I quoted above is written by Daniel Banach, Travis Jones and Alan Kalameja. You are right in saying that training is best but many of us don't have local "inventor" resources or funds for that.

I totally agree, but as the Manager of an ATC, I am morally obligated to encourage job security! I have taken classes from each of those three and they are all fantastic!
The courseware that we use at our ATC is published by ascent (ascented.com)
It is tutorial based and is excellent for new users.

Another place that might help is Sean Dotson's tutorials - http://www.sdotson.com/tutorials.asp
