View Full Version : Cutting Walls
Hi there ... maybe a dumb question, but im new to revit and trying to figure this out.
i have an existing block wall that i have built a new wall around the outside (wood stud). i have added a garage door to the outside, now i cant seem to figure out how to cut the shape out of the existing block wall.
same situation for new windows i am putting in.. any tips? im sure im just missing something really simple. thanks

The two wall are parallel to each other? Use the join geometry tool and join the walls.
ya thats what i did, when i first tried it, it wasnt working which is why i was asking, not sure what i did wrong. thanks though!

If I understand you correctly you now have a double wall consisting of a 2x4 stud wall on the exterior and a CMU wall on the interior and you want the windows and Garage door to through both. If they are relatively close together (this won't work if there is a lot of space between the walls) you can use the join geometry tool to join the walls and then the doors and window openings will cut through both. Ignore the warning " Highlighted elements are joined but do not intersect" that you will get after selecting them and just click OK, then insert a window and it should cut through both walls.
im still learning this software but i am loving it so far.. this forum is great also for reference.

Hey there,
Back in version 6 I believe, this feature was added. According to the tutorial, the walls must be within 6" of each other for this feature to work. It was a welcome feature since I do a lot of Shell Retail Buildings and then we do the Tenant Improvements after. We sometimes add furring to the interior of the exterior walls (which are now "existing") during the T.I. It was a pain in version 5.1
Good luck

I am having a similar issue, but with the door frame. I have two walls joined in geometry with a door cutting through them. The opening cuts both, but the door frame does not wrap both. I've changed all the the type parameters of the wall to wrap at inserts at both interior an exterior, but this does not change the situation. I also changed the family to include "both" in the Wall Closure parameter. Again, no difference.
With our BIM manager out on vacation, I'm looking for an answer!
Please see attached image for what I'm talking about. Thanks for your input!

Its hard to understand your problem. From your image it looks like the door frame is overlapping the walls. By wrapping do you want the frame to be as think as the wall? (would it actually be this way if you built it?)
It appears as if your opening in the family is only the width of the door, not the frame too, you need to create the opening as wide as the whole assembly and then build the frame inside.
Help?
