xrefs and layers

I am trying to freeze a particular layer, that is in an xref. There are electrical symbols in the drawing and i am inserting new symbols. I don't want to use the old symbols.I am not allowed to delete the old symbols. I need to freeze the symbols on that the particular layer in that xref.
I just started working in the field and everything seems so fast paced
please help

You should be able to go to the Layer Manager and freeze the layer the block is on. Layer name might start with the name of the file being xreffed. To check look in the Xref Manager and see what the name of the xref is. That is what the layer name will start with.

Also if you have express tools installed, check out LAYFRZ. This will ask you to select an object. The layer the object is on will then be frozen.
