Hello,

Is there an add-in, or anything else, that prevents a user from opening an RVT created in a previous version of Revit and accidentally overwriting it with a QSave?

thanks,
Joaquim

Not that I've seen. Best method for this is to not install the new version until the model's been upgraded.

The amazing Harry Mattison at Boost your BIM (http://boostyourbim.wordpress.com/) has a tool that can pop up a window before it upgrades a file
It's available on a pay-as-you-can basis here:

Get it and pay him!

Sounds a pretty solid add-in.
Will try it out.

Many thanks.

Why not just quit without saving?

Why not just quit without saving?

too dangerous to leave that decision to the impulse of "always save your work on exit".

I'll buy that for the "accidentally overwrite" portion, but a long-standing problem we've had around here is when someone opens a file that hasn't been upgraded using the newer version. It can often be 15 minutes or more watching the upgrade that you didn't want to do. And you usually can't hit the escape key fast enough to cancel the process.

This is why we include an indicator of the Revit version in the filename, here. (i.e. "_RVT13") If you are managing multiple models that are interlinked, it might be a little more of a painful upgrading process because of the change in the filename, but I think it's worth it so that the version knowledge is readily apparent and that this mistake doesn't occur as much.

Early last year, when we were still on R2013, we received a job that had been started by another architect in R2009, then shelved. We were given the 2009 file. I opened it in 2013.

converting 2009 to 2010
converting 2010 to 2011
converting 2011 to 2012
converting 2012 to 2013......

Took most of the day AND of course none of the new features added since 2009 were in the final upgraded file!
