I am using one of the stair and railing that is in the railing warehouse file that is on various sites. I want to modify the start post extension, but can't seem to figure out how to get to the profile family. Is there any way I can extract that out and modify it?

Good try, but I'm in 2012. I need to get at the start baluster family embeded in the stair and can't.

I'm pretty sure you can get at it by looking in the Project Browser > Families > Railings... then Right-Click on the baluster family and choose Edit. You'll just have to know the name of the baluster family by editing the railing properties and looking through the Baluster Placement > Edit...

YES! I was clicking on the individual instances. EX: Project Browser > Families > Railings> Post - Round w Extension - Start-Offset> Post - Round w Extension - Start-Offset 2
...and was not getting the edit. I then tried just...
Project Browser > Families > Railings> Post - Round w Extension - Start-Offset
...and there was the "EDIT" selection. Opened right up and I was able to make a new version
