How do you change the default level names in Revit and purge obsolete ones? I'm using BDS premium 2013 and trying to setup our template file. I used an existing project file and saved it as a template file and deleted and purged any unwanted stuff. Now, when I start a new project from this template, I have the ground floor level setup (Ground Floor) but when I go to add the next level, the floor name defaults to one I had setup in the previous project ie. Mezzanine. I want it to default to "First Floor".

In your template, go to a default elevation view. Revit opens with NSEW elevations and two floor levels named level 1 and level 2 by default. Edit the names there. You may also add additional levels, naming them whatever. We do Justice architecture and many prison day rooms have mezzanines, so I have levels 1, 1m, 2 and 2m in my template.
Also, you cannot purge a level if some data is placed on it. You will have to find and delete that data before it will purge.

Thanks for the reply Mike but what happens in the default template is that if you add a third level, Revit automatically calls it "Level 2" and if you add a fourth level it's automatically named "Level 3" etc.. I was wondering if I can get Revit to automatically name my levels the way I want eg. I may start with "00" as my ground floor and then when I create my next level it will automatically be named "01".

Start a new project. Open the east elevation and rename levels 1 and 2 to A and B. Then, copy level B up 10 feet. Revit will automatically name it level C. As long as Revit can determine a pattern it will try to guess the next number. It's not foolproof though.
