View Full Version : 2014 Project North and True North are backwards

I have a project that I came in on late in SD's, and now we're pretty much done with DD's i.e. the whole building is pretty much modeled. The problem is that whoever started the project appears to have started with a survey, in a site plan view set to Project North, and then rotated True North to orient the building orthogonal on the screen. So now Project and True north are backwards. That makes things really annoying especially when placing things like lights in a ceiling. They always come in skewed to the Project North angle, and then I have to do 2 align operations to get them lined up with my ceiling grid.

Is there a proper way to fix this? I'm asking because I don't think I've ever come across this before in my 10 years using Revit.

Have you considered moving to Australia?

Sorry Patrick but hard not to laugh ahahahahah

I'd try to use Rotate Project North to orient the building for documentation purposes. Then once that is fixed consider using Rotate True North in the site plan to fix that orientation.

Can't you just,
Workplane Tab /Show Grid then select the grid itself, then use "Rotate" on the grid to be orthogonal to your screen. This way components will come as usual.

Sorry but moving to australia wont fix it, because then all your water fixtures will drain backwards and you'll have the same problem.

You can turn on the project co-ordinates, I dont think repositioning anything will affect your model in any way it *should* just orientate the project in the correct position.
Go to a plan view, turn on the "site" (under architect discipline in VG settings) and turn on all the sub categories for "site" and the point will appear and you should just be able to adjust it to the correct location without any drama. Of course you should maybe try this in an "orphaned" local file or something first to make sure it doesnt break anything.....Trying to rotate your model to suit WILL cause you problems, I do not recommend it. Adjusting the project co-ords should fix it.

Nope, workplane grid shows orthogonal to building, but family instances still come in skewed (some of them). Other things show skewed to the building's true north orientation, such as model groups. If I select a model group, the little X-Y coordinate arrows are skewed off at an angle, despite the geometry in the group being orthogonal to the building.

I was just going to not worry about it on this project, however now I'm going to need to do some sun/shadow studies of a large south-facing window, so I think the correct orientation is now going to be much more important.

I tried a new file with just a property line and 4 walls. I drew the property line at an angle, and then used Rotate True North to orient the property line orthogonal to the view, and then drew in 4 walls. This made True North and Project North backwards to each other. I believe this is what was done initially on the project. I was able to fix it by first changing the angle for the Project Base Point to 0.000° (turns the building to an angle) and then using Rotate Project North to get the building back to orthogonal in the view. No problem.

So then I tried it on a detached version of my project. The project file is 54 MB right now, lots of stuff in there. I changed the Project Base Point to 0.000° no problem. But then when I used Rotate Project North, things went wacky. There were no errors, but I got 122 warnings, which it said all of which could be ignored (which I don't plan to do). One warning was asking me to review 264 elements for correct position and shape. LOTS of dimensions and constraints were deleted. Tons of elements and lines in sketches are slightly off-axis. Several of my casework families were deleted. Tons of drafting elements like filled regions did not rotate with the building. But the kicker is that all the furniture, all the site parking spaces, and other things like that, did not rotate. Why the heck not??

It's not the stuff that didn't rotate that's so bad, but the stuff that was DELETED that is bad.

Very frustrating.

Got it all fixed! Well pretty much. I decided to just delete all the dimensions in the entire project, since I'll be going back and dimensioning the finished plans anyway. Then after rotating project north, I went through and selected all the objects that didn't get rotated, and rotated them all together about the Project Base Point. The Save Selection feature saved the day here. I was able to go through multiple views and add any skewed objects to my selection set, and then rotate everything at once about the same point, to the same angle. Didn't even have to move or snap anything to any points after the rotation.

Phew glad that's done!

Too bad....you cheated yourself out of a trip to Australia.
