How are A$C & U* blocks created and how can i prevent it from happening?

I have received a drawing from a client and it is 100% populated with blocks in this way. I always thought that A$C blocks were created when drawings had been BOUND after containing an XREF. Can anyone help shed some light on this? Much appreciated.

The A$**** blocks are created anytime one does a Paste from one drawing into another. U* blocks are anonymous blocks, created programmatically. IIRC Dynamic blocks and Annotative blocks will generate those with each edit/change (either block or annotative scale)

A block name resulting from a bound Xref will have the name pattern " xrefname$0$blockname ". although the number will vary - based on how many times the xref has been bound.

If you look down at the 'similar threads' feature below your post, you'll see similar topics... seems like it's a methodology issue.
The last post in this thread (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?149083-How-do-anonymous-blocks-get-created-amp-why)says that it turns out his users were pasting as a block, so, not only was it giving a different name, it's actually a nested block, too. So, if you explode some of those blocks, you might be able to purge the A$... blocks, etc while retaining a normal one within it.
I've run into a lot of these over the years, and yeah, it's a pain. Almost as much of a pain as when someone runs FLATTEN on a drawing. Then, you don't have 200 instances of the DOOR block, you've got something like DOOR-FLAT1, DOOR-FLAT2, etc. Not a real fan of the way that's handled.
