View Full Version : Unwanted font modification

In an office of roughly twenty workstations I have one computer that refuses to properly display one of the fonts my office has been using for years. The font in question is ARCHD.SHX and the same file is installed in the AutoCAD fonts folder on this and all other machines. The font file search path in the Options dialog box on all machines is set to look at the server and the file is loaded there as well.

I have read other posts discussing similar issues that suggested a font substitution may be being run on this machine but I don't know how to check this.

Any drawings started on this machine, whether from template or scratch, will show the altered form of the font. If one of these drawings is inserted as a block and exploded on another machine, however, the font will display properly. On the other hand, if a drawing started on the rogue machine is opened on another machine the substitution problem migrates to the new machine and affects all files opened from that point onward. I have been able to fix this problem in the past on all of the other computers by changing the search path in the Options dialog box from the server to the hard drive and back again but I cannot eliminate the problem on the original machine.

Any help that can be offered to remedy this situation would be appreciated as my frustration level is now exceedingly high.

I only have one suggestion for you to try. If it happens to be a True Type font, make sure the font exists in the windows font folder also. Don't know why but for some reason acad likes it that way.

Hi

Check out the following Technical Documents on the Autodesk web site under the Knowledge Base section -

ID: TS29927 - Incorrect font displayed when using unregistered TrueType® font (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2894947&linkID=2475323)

ID: TS42355 - Some TrueType® fonts are not listed (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2872620&linkID=2475323)

Have a good one, Mike

Search for acad.fmp (probably in the Support folder). See if it contains an entry for ARCHD.
It may also be worth looking to see it another fmp file has been specified through Tool\Options\Files\Text editor, dictionary and font file names\font mapping file.

Well, no luck so far. The font is not True Type so there's no file to save to the Windows font folder. I also checked the font mapping file and there's no mention of the archd font in there. I'm stumped.

Here's a new wrinkle. I opened the architectural desktop design center and found that the text in the preview window was also showing the modified font style. This made me sufficiently alarmed to reinstall autocad in an attempt to eliminate the problem completely. Once the reinstallation was complete everything was looking good until I opened one of the files that was having the font problem. At that point the problem resurfaced but only in those files that had previously shown the modified text. Files from a different directory or drawings started with a template have the correct font.
