Components Drop Down Menu

I am new to this forum and all forums in generals, so I hope I am not breaking any rules of etiquette with this post. I am fairly new to Revit as well (1 year). I work for an architectural firm and have Revit 2014 loaded on my HP laptop with i5 vPro (I don't know what other info is of use to whomever is reading this post). In general, Revit is very slow (Revit is loaded on a VM rather than our machines). But, in addition to the day-to-day slowness of the program, I am finding that when I want to place or change a component/family in my model, the drop down menu in the properties bar takes several MINUTES to open. No one at my firm knows why this is happening (nor do they care or have any desire to fix the problem). I thought I would ask for advice on this forum to see if any one here can help. Let me know what other info you may need to help further understand this.

So you are running Revit out of a VM instead of having it installed locally on your machine? What's the purpose of that?
Try running it with no network connection and by opening the default template to see if it's still slow.
