Balusters - Please explain 'Distance from Previous'

Please see attachment below - I'm trying to make a custom set of railings and am bamboozled by the 'distance from previous' setting out. Can some kind person give me a pictorial explanation of it ?

Using 'Distance from previous' doesn't work to well when justify is set to 'spread pattern to fit'. Works as expected when it is set to beginning or end
