Is there an easy way to generate numbered lines in a schedule? I suppose I could figure out a complicated method using parameters and manual input, but there ought to be an easier way.

They ought to be but...
You could create a Calculated Value that has a hideously complex formula to simulate the sorting of the Schedule, but if any of that is dependent on a Text Parameter, you SOL with that idea. (not that it was that great of an idea to begin with)
A manual numbering system that is integral with the Schedule would not work well, since those values would have to reside within the elements, themselves. Any new element falling into the Schedule would have a null value, and create a blank entry again.
I think I would create a Key Schedule (for a Category you'll never use it for) and just make that into a manual list, mimic the formatting of the normal Schedule, and then manually place its Schedule Graphics beside the normal Schedule on the Sheet.

We use Key Schedules to do that. It's a manual process. You are correct - there ought to be an easier way.
