pendant fixture height (AFF) reporting parameter?

we're trying to figure out a way to easily generate reporting AFF dimensions for pendant light fixtures. It would be great if there was some way to create a ref plane in the family that automatically snaps to the floor of whatever level it's placed on. Then there'd be a dimension (instance) parameter from the bottom of the fixture to the reference plane.
Maybe someone has done this already or developed a different method?
Any ideas would be great.

Use a Floor Base Generic Model template and turn it into a Lighting Fixture

that's a good idea, but unfortunately we're always working with linked models and so must use face-based models.
I suppose I could create floors in our model and constrain them to the floors in the linked model; not ideal but maybe it would work?
