Refit Roof/Dormer Issue

I am trying to create a roof with a large dormer. The pitch of the main gable roof is 10/12. The pitch of the dormer is 20/12. When I created the dormer, it makes the gable end into a hip (see "wrong" image attached). I am trying to keep the main roof a gable as indicated in the "right" image. Can i override the dormer or do i need to create two separate grooves and merge/cut them? Am I missing something?

The 20/12 dormer roof is conflicting with the projection of the other roof faces. Try creating separate roof planes so that the 20/12 dormer is confined to one roofing pitched surface like the attached image portrays.
