I would like to propose a parameter that would allow one to toggle visibility of objects specific to a family on or off.
For instance, you could create a filled region, and toggle it on or off with a parameter. (The concept of showing an Exit sign symbol in plan) Windows could be created with Trim that could be toggled on or off.
I think if we could turn objects on/off in a family in a project, it could open the door for more possibilities in families. One family could contain mulitple design options.

I love this idea! Less families with more info! My library is unruly!

I would love to see an on/off or 'Options' type list added to families.
(some form of pull-down available like when we apply profiles to sweeps etc)
For Example - I would like to be able to add Detailed components to a door family so I could choose from a list of what actual Jamb detail I require for that specific instance of a door.
I have done this in the past with another 3d Object modelling system (Sonata).
This was then taken a step further and I was able to create an automated door schedule where I could scan the model and create a Jamb Detail drawing with only the Jamb details I had assigned to the specific doors.

I haven't tried this yet, but how about you create a detail componewnt attached to a line and insert that into your door family at jamb and a similar detail at head....just like the work you were doing yesterday, Martin.
Would that not do the trick? I suppose it would not be switchable between multiple jamb situations - masonry/metal stud/timber stud etc - but it would take you some of the way there.
