We wnat to have a full 1-1/2 vert. metal siding that also can be cut by windows. It would be part of a wall assembly.

Any takers?

Just use a surface pattern that is vetical, I wouldn't think you would actually model the siding, just like you don't actually model lap siding.

yep! If you really want to model it, just helped a user the other day figure this one out. Use Host Sweep>Wall Sweeps, set to Vertical, and place your vertical siding as sweeps. you will need to create a profile for your vertical siding, and make a sweep type for it, but its pretty easy. Windows and doors will cut Hosted Sweeps. The only trick is that the Hosted Sweep profile has an origin. The Window or Door must cut through this origin 'plane' in order to cut the sweep. So don't make a siding profile that is 24" wide, but repeats the same shape over and over. Make the profile one 'bump' of the siding.

Then when placing the siding vertically, you can place one, then click 'start next' from the options bar, then place again, and repeat. But I find it easier to place one, then copy it over and over...less clicking!

Be aware that this is going to suck up huge amounts of resources on a project of any size! Scott Brown's suggestion to jsut make a pattern is far less intensive on your memory and processor!

thanks sb and scott. It would be for a limited area that we want to render correctly, otherwise we will be doing what sb suggested.

Use a wall hosted family that uses a void to cut away the wall material. Set up the family on a reasonable repeating pattern and place them as needed.
