View References for Area Plans not allowed

I have never really had the need for a view reference for an Area Plans view until now, but now that I do, I have found that you cannot do it. In the reference other view pull down, there simply is not an option to select an area plan. Is this typical behavior? Has anyone ever experienced this? If so, any solutions or workarounds?

Same here. Trying to find a way how to do it without resourcing to the use of Text Notes.

I think the reasoning might be that revit sees area plans the same way they see schedules. Area plans are not plans you model in but rather they give you information about the model in a plan view format.
