If you wish to change the overall length of an associative dimension, usually you have to relocate the grip either by using the STRETCH command, or selecting the grip and SNAPing to an object.
Let's say you have an associative dimension that says 97.565mm (for those who don't use millimeters, I'll speak slowly ;) ) and you want it to say an even 100.000mm, here's what you can do:
1.Click on assoc. dimension to highlight its grips.
2.Click on the defpoint grip that you want to stretch (ie. grip at the end of the extension line).
3.Enter TK (for TracKing) and press the ENTER key
4.When prompted with "First Tracking Point", click on the OTHER defpoint grip.
5.When prompted for "Next Point", drag your cursor in the desired direction to stretch, enter the desired overall dimension length (eg. 100), and then press the ENTER key twice
That's it! Hope you like it.
At first, it may seem a lot of work, but it comes in handy in case there are no objects to snap to, and, it saves you from having to create temporary objects to snap to.
This Trick Works With AutoCAD R14 + Up.
