Deleting a datalink

What is the proper procedure to delete a datalink so that it is completely purged?

When I

1) "Datalink" command
2) (R) click the datalink to delete

I am getting an Autodesk message saying "The data link is being used and cannot be deleted"

I have deleted from the file and it is not being used or open.

Strange. Have you tried Audit?

Did you try to WBLOCK the entire drawing to a new file?

I did try Audit. I will try the Wblock command when I get back to the dwg with that issue. Thanks guys.
