I have a nearly completed project and am working on the door schedule. I added a new door and tried to give it the next consecutive number. Revit told me it was already in use by a door named Door_2522(1). Curious, I went to the browser select all instances and found there are 72 of these things in the project somewhere. I edited the family. They are prison cell doors!!!! Since the project is a police station, that's not so far fetched, but we only have 3 cells and their doors are accounted for. I cannot get Revit to show me where the 72 instances are. I even set the 3D persective to wire frame.

Any idea how I can find these doors?

Are there multiple phases involved?

Design Options?

What happens if you select all instances, then deselect the doors that are needed? Can you delete the remain ones?

Try selecting one from the Schedule.
I presume you've already tried "highlight in model.
Once it's selected in the Schedule, though, take a look a Properties. That might at least give you a clue as to Level, or Phase, or Workset.

Oooo.. Also - do you have "Include elements in links" checked? Maybe those aren't even IN the model you're looking at.

No design options, no phases. Freestanding, new building on vacant site. Curiously, although I could not find the instances, I could edit the family. They were listed under doors in the browser and they LOOKED like jail doors AKA the slammer but they did not appear in the door schedule. The door schedule has no filter. Yet when I tried to add door #242, Revit said that number was in use.

Ghost doors? Is it possible?

End of story: I coudn't see them, I couldn't find them and I couldn't schedule them, even though I could count them. So I deleted them.
