I've tried to do that in the past with PKZip, but found that the files were already compressed.

Revit files are compressed pretty tightly already, purging might give you a little wiggle room but not much.

Do you mean that the file size seems very large and you want to reduce it to save disk space or do you want to compact the file to make it easier to email? File size can be reduced by doing a "save as" to a new name instead of just saving the file when you close it. As noted by others above, compression software doesn't gain you much for emailing, etc.
