Topo performance and sub-regions

Has anyone out there done any testing with regard to topo sub-regions and model performance?
It's well known that large numbers of complex sub-regions can impact performance on large sites but what I'm wondering is this; is it the number of sub-regions (the count) or the number of sketch lines that form individual sub-regions that has the greater impact?
Any insight would be appreciated.

I have always wondered about this too.

I suspect that it's the number of Points ( which define all of the geometry behind the scenes) in to toposurface and subregions.

It would be good if the Factory could expound on this.
