View Full Version : Nothing beautiful here...just a neat Revit showcase

I did these in about 30 minutes. WIth a little more time and attention, I am sure at least some of the objections about Revit not being able to handle complex forms would evaporate.

Greg,

Very Nice! What types of Revit solids did you use to create the doubly curved surfaces?

Scott,

cone structure is a revolve with 5 voids cutting the edges

the two doubly curved roofs are basically blends with the profiles swapped at either end...i.e. at on end it is a concave curve and at the other a convex one.

The last tensile structure is simply a hyperbolic paraboloid made with a blend...one end is a thin diagonal rectangle (like a forward slash) and the other is the same shape but mirrored...essentially, it twists the "fabric".

THe one thing I noticed is that it is not always predictable what shape Revit will draw between the start and end shapes of the blend. For instance, with the hyperbolic paraboloid, if I were to get more curvature (required to reduce the stresses in fabric structures) I would increase the angle from horizontal of the diagonal rectangles...but if I do this in Revit, it creates a weird solid instead...so maybe Joe K can take a look at this and see if it is worth fixing?

Okay sharpshooter...would you email me the rvt so I can do a little destructive analysis?

Got it! Thanks Greg, very much. By the way, I did have an old address on the zoog email link...oops!

Greg,

Is it possible to post the rvt here?

I would like to have a look at it also
Thanks

Reminds me of the Cal Poly Architecture logo from, the 70's. And the cone shaped structure resembles that thin-shell "free-form" structure up in Poly Canyon. Those WERE the days.

Alright...here it is.

AJH, I kinda had the whole Poly Canyon thing in mind when throwing it together. I also suspected you would pick up on that. Thanks for not letting me down!

The cone shaped one is a recent addition to Poly Canyon that I saw last year while at Open House.
