View Full Version : Imported Image Control & Cropping Wish

It would be very useful to have the ability to crop an imported image / jpeg within Revit
for instance I can import & scale a Jpeg (eg preliminary Site Plan say) & then sketch over within Revit ~
I then find I have need to copy this worked on image & also need to increase its scale ~
What I would like is to be able crop the image around specific areas ie Zoom in to parts & have all the linework overlay adjust accordingly.

I would also like to be able to add to this wish the ability to crop an imported DWG smaller than the overall crop ie the overall crop will still crop the dwg as it does now - but I could crop the dwg in from that on its own.

Martin - I too have had this on our wishlist for a LONG time (v3). I run in to this problem everyday. We are on Microstation and it is so nice to be able to Clip a reference file to any size/shape to get just the part you need. We need to have a crop region for just the linked/imported file separate from the View crop region. I have also wished that we could Crop an area in any shape. Not all buildings and drawings are rectangular. We need the ability to draw a polygon shape as the crop region for both views and linked files.
This has been #1 on my wishlist forever. This is the biggest thing that would get other Microstation users to buy-in to Revit. When they see that it can't do this, they can't believe it.

I quite believe that, it really is the small things that matter the most to many of us - we really want some of the simple tools improved too....

<Picking on Martin mode on>
To make a point...
I did a search for the word IMAGE in the Revit Wishlist forum and got 67 returns, 4 of which have very similar titles and messages. There is a good list by Chad in one and one is mine and has a poll.
I know it is so very easy to post a wish and get back to work. It isn't really any harder to do a quick search first either. Maybe having many similar wish threads is good in that the factory gets inundated with threads about an issue but then maybe it is just one more to read when one already covers it?
Something to keep in mind...thanks!

[edit: Merged with this thread]
Hey there,
Maybe there is a way within Revit to crop imported JPG rastor images that I am not aware of (other than in a photo editing program or Microsoft's Picture It!)
It would be nice!

This is not of REALLY great importance, but it just came up so I thought I would post it:
It would be really nice if we could crop images that have been imported into Revit (say, photographs on a sheet). This probably doesn't come up too often, but would be a nice feature, especially when assembling information (such as scans, photographs) for things like Master Use Permits.

Hey! How did my explanation of this pole end up at the bottom of the thread list?

Because your thread was merged with this existing wish. ;)

The polygonal crop region would also be very helpful as well, since this is essentially a feature which AutoCAD has had since I believe release 2000 or so! (Never mind the fact that in Auto#@%! you are having to deal with xrefs, and multiple copies of annotations, etc., which Revit has already solved.)

Didn't see another thread and tought it fits with this. Along with a more robust image import a wider variety of acceptable images would be awsome.

I assume you mean allow Revit to import other image file types such as .tif files, rather than just .jpg and .bmp. Tiffs would be the one file format I can see as being the most useful.

create a floor or wall object, paste a decal, stretch decal to correct size, reduce wall or floor area to crop decal and image
workaround, workaround,workaround.................not guaranteed

That sure sounded great, other than the fact that decals only show up in a rendered 3d view.
So much for that workaround for inserting scanned drawings of floor plans and elevations! Thanks for the idea, anyway, mmodernc.

imported jpegs even ignore the view crop regions...and solid filled regions don't seam to cover it up either. I don't want to crop the image itself, i need it all in another view (site plan overlaid on an aerial photo) but in some views i'd like to zoom in and crop something... not working.
from another comment on this thread, i think decals working in non-rendered views is a pretty critical feature.
from comments in other threads and wishes - just want to reiterate how necessary it is that we be able to scale images to world scale, not view scale. If you're importing a photo, view/print scale is fine, if you're importing scanned drawings, aerial photos, and pretty much anything i use the import image for.. they need to scale to real world units, not go all freaky when you change the view scale.
