I want to create a roof edge fascia as a sweep object, but the path of the fascia deviates from the path of the roof edge in some places. How do I accomplish this? See sketch below.

I can't find a way to draw the portion of the sweep path that is not on the roof surface. Is there a way to create a 3D polyline unrelated to any other geometry and use that as the basis for a sweep? Can I use the intersections of reference planes to create lines that drive the sweep?

You can do it in dynamo. Not sure about native revit, at least the 3d polyline option.
I'd have to see a 3d picture of what you're trying to accomplish.
I'd be thinking about trying adding an offset dimension from the edge of the roof that doesn't align.
ie just change the location of the sweep. Unless you're not doing that as a model in place and just trying to use the bottom edge as a host. If that's the case you can't really doo what you want.
