Hi Guys,

I am trying to add an offset parameter for a simple power outlet family, which allows the symbol to be offset from the host wall. I have had no issue creating offset parameters to move the symbol left and right from the geometry position, but have not been able to create an offset parameter to move the symbol off the host wall. What is strange, is that the offset parameter I have created seems to work in the family, but does not work when I load the family into the project. I have attached the family for your information.

I would appreciate anyone's help on this.

Thanks

You need to build that offset into the nested annotation family and then use Associate Family Parameter to allow the host family to change it. In the annotation family select all the graphics, move it away from the origin, group them, add a dimension between reference plane and part of the group, than add a parameter to the dimension. Test it and it should move everything together. Make sure it is an instance parameter.

The distance you enter to move it in the project will also be "off" because it is moving in a 2D family distance, printed size. I have an example family but won't have access to it until tonight.

Thanks very much Steve! Works perfectly :)

Steve, have you figured out how to create the following option? We have been using the positive/negative offset for years but would prefer the forward offset - maintains alignment of the symbol with the outlet. Face-based outlet hosted to a wall. My instinct is that it is not possible.

Sure, you have to embedded the offset in the symbol family and then map that to the host family. You end up with a "paper space" offset value for the symbol but the device remains in place. It usually means creating a group of the symbol graphics and labels and applying a parameter to drive the group's position.

Thank you Steve, your instructions were spot on. Now, how do I make the offset distance look the same on plans no matter what scale I have on?

It won't work at any/all scales. The annotation relationship to model elements depends on the view scale. For example, if you tag all doors and change the scale the tag's size/position will be affected. The question is, "When does the relationship no longer work?" Going up or down to the very next typical scale might still work but it will be different.

Hi guys

it is very helpful for me to read this useful information. It clears all my doubts on Power Outlet Offset from Host Wall. Thanks for sharing...
