Create Widening On Offset Alignment

I'm working on trying to create widening on an offset alignment. Now, I should specify that I'm NOT working on a roadway here. I'm working on a layout for a drainage channel. So when I create the widening, I want the widening to happen over the course of the whole offset alignment. I need it to start at a 3.5' offset at the beginning and end at a 74' offset. The computer seems to want me to create a transition, and offset area and then a transition out. I guess I'm confused because the computer seems to want to over complicate this...

Is there a simplified command that I need to use? Can anyone help me?

Draw an alignment or a polyline where you want the widening to be and then target the same object in your corridor.

I don't understand your suggestion. Can you elaborate?

(The alignment isn't straight. If I could draw it with a polyline, I would but I want the computer to do it for me.)
