Family Can't Extend or Grip Correctly

I have a pendent lighting fixture family. In that family there is a fixture and hanger family. I can't get the hanger to have the ability to have grips and have the ability to type in the length of the hanger. I can get either or through different setups. But not both. Any ideas?

Ok, I stumbled on a fix for this. Sometimes Revit is very frustrating. This is one of those times. In the fixture family I placed the bottom of the fixture at the reference level. Then made a reference place over the top of the fixture. Made it a Top reference. You can not lock to this reference though. Load that into the lighting fixture family. Made a new reference plan over the top of the fixture and a lock icon shows up. But only when you first draw it. You can not lock to that reference after it its drawn. This drove me crazy. Something to keep in mind. I attached the working family.
