all generic family components default to same material parameter?

I've created a generic model family that contains multiple components. I have created and assigned a different material parameter to each of the components. When I load the family into the project I find that all of it's components default to the same material parameter, which happens to be the last one that was last assigned before saving the family. What am I forgetting/missing?

Stab in the dark: Are the components joined? If they are, they will all share the same material parameter, so as you think you are applying a different material parameter to each component, you are really just changing which parameter applies to them all.
