Family not showing in printed view

We're creating some shop drawings for a piece of furniture, a bench. The furniture is a regular Furniture family type, loaded into a project, and then we have created several plan, reflected plan, elevation and 3D views for the bench. The problem is that some reflected plan (RCP) views have made the family geometry disappear from the view. The view is set to full scale, and it's zoomed in on just one leg of the bench. It seems to print okay at first, but then if I change the graphic "silhouette" setting to a heavier line type, the whole geometry visible in the view disappears completely from the printed view. Looks fine on the screen, but the geometry is gone from any print preview, PDF or paper print. And then if I change it back to no silhouettes, it's STILL gone from the view! And the problem also seems to go away and come back again depending on whether the view is cropped to just that one leg or of the whole bench, or even where on the bench the view crop region is set to.

Any ideas what could be causing this?
