Families attaching to host

Dumb question but how do you get lights to attach to columns in a linked file? OK so I am working to get lights (and other families) to attach to the face of a wide flange column. The family just won't attach to the host. I have similar issues with lights that have to attach to the ceiling of a linked architectural file.

This is only my second day on the job and I just look like a newbie because I can't get these dam families to attach to the host. They work great if the column or ceiling are native to the model, but they need to work when the main architectural model is linked in.

sounds like the family you are using is likely a wall based family. we typically use face based families to avoid this issue.
