View Full Version : 2016 XREF VARIABLE FOR WORKSPACE?

Hi all, I'm not sure where to find the info for my issue. Some drawing files have the XREF dialog box opened upon opening the file. Other files do not exhibit this, and if I need it, I use a keyboard shortcut (xr) to open the dialog box. By default, I want the dialog box closed. Maybe if I had a bigger screen, or even a second monitor, I wouldn't care. As it is, it is mostly annoying. Is there a variable, or something that controls this? Thanks!

In the CUI select your Workspace then click [Customize Workspace] button, expand Palettes on the right and select "External References", change Appearance below to "No", click [Done] above, and click [Apply] then [OK] below.

This is how mine is configured, and I too have XREF Palette pop up on drawing open in 2016.

Odd, I tested in 2015 & 2016 on drawings with or without xrefs & XREF Palette didn't pop up until I opened it.
Do you have AutoCAD set to use Single-Document-Interface? This causes the classic xref dialog window to be used no matter what xref command is entered. Since it's not a Palette I don't think it would be controlled by Workspace.

I too have those (CUI) settings for the XREF in my workspace, and I am my current SDI is 0. It is possible that the other person who works on these drawings is using classic ACAD setup (and 1990s CAD practices). Perhaps there is a connection.
Here are the other settings in my (CUI) XREF Palette: Show-no; Orientation-Floating; Allow Docking-no; Autohide-on; Use Transparency-no.

Autodesk Infrastructure Design Suite Premium 2016
Civil 3D 2016 SP3.0
Built on AutoCAD 2016 SP1
AutoCAD Map 3D 2016 SP2
SDI = 0
In Appearance I have Use Transparency-no and everything else set to Do not change.
Maybe a Service Pack fixed it? The only thing I found searching was about using the classic xref dialog window.

I tried changing all the setting for (CUI) XREF to "Do not Change", and then one by one - while opening and closing ACAD and testing - turned them back to what I had the previous to that. The initial change to "do not Change" seems to have fixed the issue. But, I have a hunch it is really related to the Classic user. I was also testing opening drawings that I know that person worked on last - and during my testing, the setting for (CUI) XREF AutoHide to "on" may have tripped the palette during Open of drawing, but it may have been the interface with classic settings.
