Setting for text editor box

I have not yet found a solution to the "text editor" sitting on top of the text I wish to edit. Each time I must drag the box off of the text so I see it. I have looked on-line but nothing has worked so far. Your helpful ideas would be appreciated.

By default the text editor is not a dialog, the editing happens "in place".

Or do you mean that the text formatting toolbar thing is in the way?

Also, what is MTEXTED set to?
