My base file has attached itself. I cant simply detach it. How can I purge it?

Ouch! Circular reference, never had one (knock on wood), try using AUDIT if you're in the drawing, or RECOVER the drawing otherwise.
If you're still struggling attach or post a link to the drawing.

Can't you just rename it, then detach?

Create a new drawing. Paste in the CAD entities from the other drawing into the new drawing. This should resolve the issue.

Must be a day for weirdities in files. i've got an existing conditions base file, that has the future design attached as an XREF. twice today it's gotten fubared, with the Xref elements suddenly becoming part of the current drawing during an autosave, and generating errors. I can unload the XREF, but the elements are still there and selectable.
AUDIT after that puts all the former-xref bits on a $BAD_AUDIT layer, and saving, closing, recover generates a LOT of errors. finally looked workable again, and an hour later did the same thing.
