I am having trouble logging on to the site from my office network in Michgian. Seems to be an issue with comcast. Oh well... I am in San Diego for a long week end and would appriciate any help I can get.

I need hekp in making a family that will snap to a hip or a ridge... (ridge UI can fake in) but the hip I am at a loss.

How do I make a family that will join a hip and a ridge roof? I looked on the Rugi site but I have not a clue on how to make it work If someone could email me a start in the right direction...

Thanks

Doug

Doug,

If you could be a little more specific about what you are trying to accomplish, it might help. I am guessing that you are trying to make that Hip Cap?

Heres one method to model a hip cap.

1. Make the hipped roof.
2. Copy that roof and raise it about 1" or 2" above the real roof. (cap height )
3. Edit the copied roof, cutting its profile back to a hipped cap outline. ( offset each side of the hip ridge)
4. Duplicate the original roof family, rename it "hip cap roof " or sim. and revise it to just have the capping material at the correct thickness.
5. Swap the copied roof, ( now modified to a hip cap outline), to the new hip cap roof family.

You may need to mirror the hip cap, since you can only create/edit one roof at a time.

Great tip Beegee. I just tried it and I suggest that you use the opening tool (pick and offset ridge and hips) to cut back the capping more easily. Otherwise it gets confusing with slope define. I'll throw in one more tip create a model fill pattern - line spacing whatever and angle 90 degrees so that the roofing material looks more roof like the dwf file attached

Hi Garn,

Yes DWF is supported, it won't open automatically, you need to select "Save Target as".

I don't see how the opening tool would work since that would require you to leave the facia roof edge in place ie you can only cut a hole.

The slope defining lines are already there, since you copied the original roof and just raised it, so that shouldn't be a problem.

With the surface hatch, what I do is define the roof sheeting to have a model pattern under Material properties.

It worked ok for me without a surrounding fascia. It was a vertical opening and I picked the rigdes and hips and fascias. see image.

You know what ?

You're right !

I was sure I had tried to do that before and failed :screwy:

Sorry, and thanks, because that makes the whole thing much easier.

Yip, as Garn said. Just create your cap as a profile family and using the host facia sweep select the ridges etc on the roof.

Gents, that's a work around I have been looking for for a while.

Very clever stuff from all concerned, thanks.
