I have checked that my text color is not the same as the window. I can't see current command text or history. Commands still operate as expected.
thanks for your time :)

no sooner when I post on here, I tried something and it fixed the problem. Somehow it had to do with the font itself. When I changed it to some other font it showed up.

Same in the F2 text window also?
Running dual monitors? If so, same on both?

F2 text window?

F2 text window? If you hit the function key F2, it displays the command line in a text window. In 2016 and above, you need to hit ctrl+F2 to get a separate window.

What did you change it to?

I accidently did the same many years ago. Seems you could set the font to anything, but not all will display as I remember.

What gives you this idea? F2 by itself still opens the text window in 2018.

F2 still displays command line history temporarily, but Ctrl+F2 actually opens it in a separate window like F2 used to do.

Not here. F2 does what it has always done. (You'll have to trust that I'm only pressing F2)

If you have the command line as a window F2 does what it has always done, if it's the newer floating that doesn't take any screen space and not a window then it doesn't.

It was that way when I upgraded so I assumed it was the new functionality. When F2 didn't work for me, I found ctrl+F2 in the function key reference. Here (http://help.autodesk.com/view/ACD/2016/ENU/?guid=GUID-C9DB1661-36D0-4E5B-99A0-43A6ACA46110) I found it documented both ways.
RK, I see you have a docked window with 3 lines showing. When the command line is floating, only one line shows. Hitting F2 would display 3 lines in your case. It goes by the value of CLIPROMPTLINES.

Thanks @Ed and @Tom.
I never work with the floating command line palette, and do not encourage others to do so.
It's too easy to miss information that is displayed at the command line, especially for newer users. (Yes, I know the information is momentarily displayed in full, but it does eventually go away - and I base this opinion on having to help many users who miss this data, for whatever reason)
Thanks again!

To each their own as I prefer the floating command line palette for the same reason you don't. I see more command line stuff as I need it using a fraction of the screen space of the old method. In fairness it took several versions to convince me as the earlier versions didn't work as well.
I set the # of visible command lines to 6 by clicking the Wrench symbol on the left and picking "Lines of Prompt History". They're visible as long as the command is active and about 5 seconds afterwards.
The text displayed by clicking the up arrowâ–˛ on the floating command line, hitting F2, or using the list command can be adjusted by dragging the edges with the mouse same as the window.
