Layouts are defined in templates.
We often need layout tabs from other files and the design center is a great tool to copy a layout tab from an existing DWG, but why not from a DWT where the standards are supposed to be defined? I know I can create a copy of my templates as DWG's, so I can import objects with the Design Center, but why the extra step?

I would like the search feature in the design centre to also work on dwt's.

Just an update - I believe this is possible with AutoCAD 2006 - see attached image - is this what you were looking for?

Hi Brenda does that also mean the search feature works on templates. I am on Autodesk Map 3D subscription so hopefully it won't be too long before I receive it.

That is good news. This has annoyed me to no end.

Hi Nathan,

I don't think so. I don't use the design center too often, so I am not sure, but I wasn't able to find a way to search for templates - but, I could just be missing it.

Thanks Brenda, It seems they have moved one step forward and hopefully they will make the next step with 2007.

In the mean time you can right-click on the layout tab in a drawing and select From template... This allows you to import layouts from DWTs or DWGs.
