I have to do over a storm drain site plan here, & show all the catch basins, manholes, outfalls, & interconnecting piping, roughly 250 structures.

Previously I did it in Acad, using blocks for the catch basins, manholes, etc. But without any api extensions, it's a pain to set up export template files, export the blocks into a spreadsheet, lada, lada, lada.

Now I'm going to try it in Revit (because I love the way it does schedules), with an imported 2d site plan & structures & piping set in place.

I've got the structures done, with shared parameters so they work & schedule properly.

What I'd like to be able to do is set the pipe between them using a family similar to a structural beam family, i.e. just draw a pipe from structure to structure, & be able to store size & material as parameters.

I tried to set up the piping, by modifiying a structural beam template file, and changing it's family category to "site".

Can't get it to work. I get error messages saying that none of the elements are visible in the view. I checked view range, set view detail to fine, etc.

After all of the above, I guess my question is: Are structural beam template files the only families set up to draw from point "a" to point "b", or am I missing something when setting up the family?

Hi Andrew,

I'm not sure about the template question, but, why not just do the pipework as a structural family anyway ? That way it should behave and schedule correctly.

Thanks, beegee. That's what I'll do.

Just need one more family template. Draw the pipe from structure to structure, highlight it, go to properties, set the elevation (invert) at each end, then I could cut sections & do profiles.... Job done.

But then, there's no reason a new family template would have to wait for a new release, is there???
