in place vs "un tag-ables"

why use the "built in sweep and fascia Feature" and the likes when you can model in place and match properties in order to tag by category? also can you really not tag sweps and fascia... beyond "material". am i missing something? i can add all kinds of id data but still cant tag?

i really just model in place because i dont need to schedule fascia.

any thoughts are appreciated. im new at real world application.
