Materials from a Linked File

Is there anyway I can get the materials from a linked file? We are a ID Firm and need to do a lot of renders and some of them show parts of the exterior of the building. I know I could ask the Architect for the materials but was hoping I can just open the file and extract somehow so I can have a folders that links into the project. Thanks.

That works, but only if your materials aren't using jpegs.
The images don't come along with the file.
I've been complaining to Autodesk about their lack of progress with the desktop connector piece.
Maybe in the future we'll get images to come along somehow. But in the mean time all you can do is ask for them and map them to a similar location on your network.

I was only considering OOTB materials, not custom.
