I am still relatively new to all the nuances of Revit and watch quite a lot of YouTube video tutorials. In one of said tutorials, I discovered how to color code furniture in my FF&E floor plan so as to differentiate task chairs (lavender) from desk systems (blue), guest chairs (green), storage (orange) and existing furniture (grey). However, I did not write it down anywhere because it was such an easy thing to do without having to go into each family and place a mask.
It should be noted that I cannot copy the furniture as it loses the color assigned. However, if I move the furniture around on the floor plan to another space, the color/shading goes with it. I did not apply a mask, nor did I change anything within the family file to accomplish the color. It must be a type of key assignment. It does not seem to be attached to Architecture / Room & Area / Color Schemes either.
Fast forward several months, revisions, the "new" furnishings need to likewise be color coded. I cannot for the life of me remember how I did it. Please see the attached image for reference.
