ESRI .shp Buffers

I am trying to appease an ArcBiship. He wants me to put buffers on my .shp exported Polylines. Is this even possible in 2005 Map 3D?

It is possible to create buffers from a topology...
So you could create a topology with the existing plines, and then do the Buffer analysis...
