I recently accidently deleted a block of a complex door from my drawing, It happened a while ago so I couldn't undo.
I found an old version before some modification on an autosave and copied it into my drawing (copy/paste) thinking that I would have to re-modify it but it auomatically updated to the current version. (I have no complaints about that).
That got me wondering, if all the block information is retained in a drawing even if the block is deleted is it possible to retrieve a deleted block?

Sounds like you simply deleted the block insertion. As long as the block wasn't purged it's modified definition was still in the drawing.
While the modified block definition remains there's no way to retrieve the insertion points, scale, layer, or other properties needed to replace the block insertions unless they were in that old autosaved version.

If it's true you still have the updated version of the block definition in the drawing (but insert instances were deleted), and you have a copy of the drawing with the blocks in place but not updated (and they're the same block name)..
Then you "should" be able to simply copy them from the old drawing and paste them into the current drawing (paste to original coordinates) and they will be in place and updated.
