Starting out working in the "back office" is a tough job. All these years, all I've done is really worked with the front end of AutoCAD, Softdesk, LDT, etc. I understood the settings, created plot style, created standards for the office, but I finally took on the task of installing, tweaking, and setting up AutoCAD for other users. Of course before I could install it on another user's system, I had to set it up on my own first. After the 4th install, I finally got the procedure down to where I almost understand it.
The first installation, I installed LDT 2005, Survey 2005, Civil Design 2005, Civil 3D 2005, and Raster Design 2005 (in that order). Every thing seemed to work fine at first, then I started getting deeper and deeper into the settings and realized that my Civil and Survey menus didn't get installed. So, thinking it was my fault, I uninstalled and reinstalled everything in the same order paying even closer attention to what was getting installed and how. Unfortunately, everything was the same. So what I did for the 3rd install was just reinstall LDT 2005. With that, I got my Civil and Survey menus, but lost my AutoDesk Map 2005, LDT 2005, and LDT 2005 Complete menus. Now, most of the menu items are in both Civil Design and Survey, but I'm still missing a few of them (ie. Insert, Format, Tools, Draw, Dimension, Modify, and Parcels) which aren't included in either the Civil Design or the Survey menu.
Odd how these installations work, you can't install Civil Design or Survey without first having LDT 2005 installed, but when you install Civil Design and Survey (after LDT 2005) they aren't picked up by LDT 2005, so you have to reinstall LDT 2005 (AFTER you have installed Civil Design and Survey) in order to get the proper menu palettes to show up.
For the 4th and Final Installation (after another complete uninstall of LDT 2005, Civil Design and Survey), I did something a little different. Instead of rushing through ALL of the component installations, I installed LDT 2005, opened it up, checked my menu palettes (got AutoDesk Map 2005, LDT 2005, and LDT 2005 Complete), closed it, installed Civil Design 2005, opened up LDT 2005, checked my menu palettes again (got AutoDesk Map 2005, LDT 2005, and LDT 2005 Complete + Civil Design), closed it, installed Survey, opened LDT 2005 again, check the menu palettes and got my final (correct) result...AutoDesk Map 2005, LDT 2005, and LDT 2005 Complete + Civil Design + Survey.
What I am posting here is what I was looking for about 2 months ago when I first took this task on. I'm posting it because even though YOU might not need it, there is some new guy (similar to myself) that it might just help.
Here is the final setup procedure that I have come up with (for components that run inside LDT 2005 (or 2006):
1. Install Land Desktop 20XX (where XX = the year)
2. Open LDT 20XX (make sure it runs properly), check your menu palettes, then close it.
3. Install Civil Design 20XX
4. Open LDT 20XX, check your menu palettes, then close it.
5. Install Survey 20XX
6. Open LDT 20XX, check your menu palettes.
