By what method does everyone use to create countertops? I'm thinking it must be a floor slab??? Anyone using the cabinets available from AWI? Everything i've seen within Revit seems to be aimed at residential casework.

I use the WIC (?) casework and then use an In-Place family for the countertop. I use an extrusion for the top and a sweep with a profile I created for the backsplash. It works slick. This allows me to create any shape of countertop I want and place the sink-hole (in any shape) anywhere I want too.

How does this work with irregularly shaped countertops? AS in when the front is radiused. I tried loading the WIC casework without success.

When using a counter top with a bullnosed face, use a sweep to define the countertop, rather than an extrusion. You could have bullnose and intergrated backsplash too.

hen I say irregular, I mean in the horizontal direction. Or what if it goes from 12" wide to 24" wide with a radius between the different widths?

You can draw any shape you want as an extrusion then sweep the bullnose along the edge of the extrusion.

Have a look at the image, is that irregular enough? (Who would want a countertop like this? I don't know!)

Believe it or not, I do a lot of funky reception desks for offices that resemble your sketch. Also the fronts get crazy as well. I figured I could do a profile for the fronts and extrude those but I wouldn't know how to start a profie like yours for the top only?? Thanks for the message.

I have an animation which shows how to create a worktop with bullnose.
If you are unsure how make a worktop then have a look at the attached file. This was created using captivate and runs in explorer as a html page.

Thank you very much for posting that. It helps very much.

Is it possible to also do this in place on the floor plan?

Great video, would be nice if people posted more of those.
Another version with parameters would be even better.

That video was great. It would be nice sometimes if the "guru's" on this forum could post using that "capture" software. Sometimes the written responses just don't get to the point. Is that software free or purchased?

What would really be nice is if Autodesk produced something like this. I suspect the reason Autodesk produces next to zero training content is so that the resellers can make a buck. Too bad for you if you don't live near a kindly reseller.

Joef ~ Guess the profession of the guy who wrote this wonderful tutorial

Have to agree I love the format of this ~ clear & explicit & no language barriers

Thank you Roy

I have no idea what his profession is. It is a very nice piece of work. If he is an Autodesk employee I would be very surprised. But stranger things have happened. It would be great if there were more tutorials like this, but for users to produce them in their spare time is not a strategy a company as large as Autodesk should have to depend on.

Totally Agree with you Joe
No arguements from me there
For the main part It really should be Autodesk's responsibility ~ and I cannot help wondering why all requests & suggestions like this have been ignored ~ so what is the logic & strategy behind it?

Incidentally Roy works for a Reseller

The software was Macromedia Captivate ( I have no connection with the company or it's distribution so I am not on the sell! HaHa)

You can download a 30 day trial from macromedia.com. I have also tried Camtasia but I prefer the options in Captivate (I saw Camtasia a while ago so I apologise if I am out of date, you know the kind of thing... I don't like Revit 'cos it can't do stacked walls! lol.).

I will try, whenever time/knowledge allows, to post more of these captures as re-payment for all the help I get from this forum although Beegee or Scott or Aaron( and many more) usually beat be to it!

One person asked if they can draw the counter top in place, the answer is yes. Most definately. Click modelling, create, casework, build whatever you want in place, set objectstyles and materials etc. This type of counter it the reason for in place families. As a rule of thumb just remember if its only used once and in this project, use an in place family. If you need multiple copies of it create it outside in the family editor. I would still create all the profiles as profile families as you will probably want them on various other custom countertops.

As you asked so nicely I could not refuse. Here is a simple parametric dining table. I use this a lot as an introduction to parametrics. I plays a little longer than previous, so get youself a nice cup of coffee.

If you do create something in place, then wished you had made a family, and let's face it - Who hasn't? - you can make a group out of it , then save the group. May be better than starting again?
